So it has come down to it at last. The final nail in the coffin. The ending waltz on the dance floor. The last Pringle in the can. Or something. Either way, we have sworn in another president, we have upheld our particularly American brand of Democracy, and we are all certainly awaiting every politician to be taken into custody, executed, and then for Trump to rule forever. Q just has to be correct right? The track record is.... stunning? Pictured: Q at his computer, or something. Creator: Rembrandt | Credit: Hermitage Either way, our country has reached the dawning of a new administration. An event that has happened 45 previous times, and will undoubtedly happen many many more. But along the way, there was a bit of... discourse, if you could call it that. Most of it was spurned on by the greatest of all threats in this day and age, the Keyboard Warriors. Yes, this multi-class, 12th level, 5h Edition DnD champion has, for the last 5-6 years at least, had an alarmingly large a
OH EM GEE! Millennials are like, sooooo entitled! They want everything handed to them on a platter! They never wanna work, they are soooooo lazy! It's really no wonder they aren't getting anywhere in the world. I mean, please, you expect to work 50 hours a week and still be able to eat after paying bills? Whatever. So much entitlement you'd swear Vince McMahon owned shares in it. I just can't believe these idiots! I'm so glad I'm not a millennial! Not me! Just a good ol' fashioned 90's kid. Nothing wrong with us whatsoever! (ed note: God it hurt to talk like that. So yeah. Millennials. Your welcome.)
Well, I'm back from having that nervous breakdown up there, lets get into some serious discussion now shall we? There have been a bit of hatred and intolerance lately regarding a certain group of people. Am I talking about LGBTQ people? No. No I am not. African-Americans? No. Hispanics? No. Not them. Native Americans? Democrats? Republicans? Nazis? Orange people? No, no, no no, god no. Okay maybe I have to be more specific. Lotta snowflakes these days. (ed note: Just earned my GOP membership card for that one. Woo.)
The hate I'm going to be talking about is directed primarily towards Millennials, a group of people generally considered to be comprised of young folks aged 15-37. These esteemed young people have the notable distinction of being born in one of the most cluster-f@$kiest times in recent memory. Now, generally when a group of people raise their voices loud enough to be heard in opposition to the establishment, they are considered either a nuisance, and roundly ignored, (ed note: Hippies) ostracized and looked down upon, (ed note: Also Hippies), or treated as a threat and dealt with swiftly and violently if needed. (ed note: Still Hippies) All together, these groups have a track record of failure more than they do success. However, their successes are usually pretty eventful. The Civil Rights movement helped to establish equal rights for various minority Americans around the country. The Women's Suffrage movement got women more gender equality, plus the right to vote. And lest we forget, our Founding Fathers drafted the Declaration of Independence to ensure that they could stick it to the man. In writing no less.
The failures though, are quite spectacular. The beatnik era, although home to some of our greatest modern poets and storytellers, was largely seen as a time when the youth of America wandered aimlessly across a country that wanted them to be productive and do something with their lives. For many, their greatest aspiration was to hitchhike far and wide and end up dead from an overdose in some sleazy Wichita motel. (ed note: No good comes from Wichita) And the hippie movement, while accomplishing much of the same art related endeavors as the beatnik one, caused an entire generation of people to be ostracized and hated. Their foul and despicable treatment of the returning Vietnam soldiers soured what could have a momentous and paradigm shifting community into a laughing stock and the butt of many jokes for years to come.
In many ways, millennials are seen as the successors to the dubious crown formerly worn by the hippies. They are almost constantly ridiculed for 'expecting' everything to be handed to them. But are their talking points really all that bad? What the great majority of them seem to be fighting for is a more capable future for themselves and their children. What is often lambasted against them is that they are trying to push the Baby Boomers out of the decision making processes and the running of the country. But, you know what? Why the heck shouldn't that be happening. The average boomer is around 50-70 years old these days. Should these people STILL be running the country and making all the decisions after all these years? It seems that every time a millennial is debated, the person who is against them begins to speak down to them, as if they are uneducated and don't know how the world works. Clearly wanting to be able to have a job that can actually pay for housing and food is WAY to much to ask these days.
In essence, all people in the USA want the same thing; to live freely and happily. For some, that means committing atrocities against people who aren't your color, but that's different blog post. The general notion is that the American Dream is nigh unattainable these days. It used to be that you could go to school, get a fairly well paying job, and eventually, earn enough to get a moderately sized house in suburbia and marry with exactly 2.5 kids and a white picket fence. Now obviously that's not everyone's dream, but you get the gist. Jobs nowadays would be lucky to pay for ONLY your rent in most states, and that's not counting the other bills that pile up such as student loans, insurance payments and the rising cost of groceries, food and other necessities. Many have to live in homes/apartments with more than one roommate just to be able to pay bills.
On top of all this, most cultures in the US have a stigma against living at home past the age of 25. For them, this is the age that you are finishing college, and surely you will have a well paying job all lined up after that to pay everything right? Of course you do Skylar. But sadly, the case is often that young people now have to live out of friend's houses or even their cars, just to have enough money to make ends meet. With the current direction the country is heading, all of this seems to be getting worse as things go on, so that's comforting.
At the end of the day, millennials want what all others want. A life. But the cost of this life is rising exponentially, and it's leaving many behind. Too many times have news stories been run of young men and women getting seriously hurt or ill, and refusing to go to the hospital or have 911 called for them, simply because they know they won't be able to afford the cost of the medical bills. I personally have many friends who still live with parents due to ALL of their checks going towards medical or school payments. This is unacceptable. These are people who WILL be running this country in only a few short years. How can we expect them to gain an appreciation for this country if all we do is spite them for wanting what so many others worked the same amount to achieve. This isn't the American Dream. Or maybe it is, and we've all just forgotten. Dreams are often hard to remember after all. I only hope that the next time I sleep, it's more I Love Lucy, than 1984.
Damn young people. |
